煤氣燈效應是一種心理操蹤的形式，方法就是用隱秘的方式讓受害者慢慢的開始懷疑自己，使他們質疑自己的記憶力，感知力或判斷力，結果是導致受害者的認知失調和其他變化，例如低下的自我尊重。
此術語最早起源來自電影《煤氣燈》Gaslight，電影裡丈夫試圖透過煤氣燈緩慢變暗，同時假裝什麼都沒改變，目的是要讓妻子懷疑自己的看法，破壞妻子對現實的看法。

Gaslighting is a colloquialism, loosely defined as making someone question their own reality.
The term may also be used to describe a person (a "gaslighter") who presents a false narrative to another group or person which leads them to doubt their perceptions and become misled (generally for the gaslighter's own benefit), disoriented or distressed.
Generally, this dynamic is only possible when the audience is vulnerable, such as in unequal power relationships, or when the audience is fearful of the losses associated with challenging the false narrative.
Gaslighting is not necessarily malicious or intentional, although in some cases it is.
