The Way We Were by Kimbra (Cecille Elliott remix)

I began by taking Kimbra's vocals and isolating them, then began to think about the emotions this song brings up. Halftime became a natural element I couldn't escape, as did the sound of violas intertwined with electronics and the existing vocals. Viola is one of my favorite instruments to combine with electronics, and this tune carries an emotional weight that I felt the viola could compliment well. I enjoyed playing with harmony and dissonance against the constant and unyielding halftime beat that drives the song onward even though the lyrics show someone struggling to move onward. In the final chorus, I layered 8 different passes on one another as the tune builds. The four note motif ended up being a sort of sibling of “dies ire”, adjacent and mourning the loss of what was.
